Care Quality Commission
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of all health and adult social care in England. They regulate health and adult social care services in England, whether they're provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations. They also protect the rights of people detained under the Mental Health Act.

Updated: New publication informs patients and families what standards to expect from the regulation of their NHS hospital
Following the introduction of a new law, all NHS hospitals in England must now be licensed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). To be licensed hospitals must show that they are meeting new essential standards of quality and safety. Now CQC has published a leaflet which informs patients, their carers and families, what they can expect from the essential standards.
The 'What Standards to expect from the regulation of your NHS Hospital' booklet can now be downloaded below:

Consultation on revised enforcement
This consultation looks at changes we (CQC) have had to make to the enforcement policy to reflect our new enforcement powers.
We have revised our current enforcement policy because some of our enforcement powers are different to those we anticipated when we published our first policy in March 2009.
There are changes to Warning Notice arrangements, and we have added ‘Compliance Actions’ and ‘Improvement Actions’ to our possible regulatory responses.
Our basic approach and the principles we will follow when responding to failure to comply with the essential standards remains unchanged from our existing policy.
The consultation runs until Tuesday 31 August 2010 . We plan to publish our final enforcement policy on 1 October 2010.

Barnet and Enfield patients and families to benefit from new essential standards of care, says CQC
The Care Quality Commission (CQC), the new independent regulator of health and adult social care, will license services if they meet essential standards and constantly monitor them to make sure they are compliant with new legislation about to be passed in parliament.
NHS trusts are the first to come into the new system starting 1 April this year; they will be followed in October by all providers of social care for people over 18 years of age and by providers of independent healthcare. Over the coming two years the system will include all primary care and dentists too.
