Carers' strategy

Unpaid carers play a vital part in meeting the health and social care needs of relatives and friends, but often do not get properly recognised and supported. In 2008, the government produced a carers’ strategy, Carers at the heart of 21st century families and communities: a caring system on your side, a life of your own. Paul Burstow, the Minister for Care Services, is seeking to refresh the carers’ strategy, setting priorities and producing a clear plan of action for
2011 to 2015. More details can be found HERE.
The previous vision still holds - that by 2018:
“carers will be universally recognised and valued as being fundamental to strong families and stable communities. Support will be tailored to meet individuals’ needs, enabling carers to maintain a balance between their caring responsibilities and a life outside caring, while enabling the person they support to be a full and equal citizen”.
The government is looking at how this can be achieved in practice, in a difficult financial climate.
Views and evidence, especially from carers, are invited by 20 September.
Enfield LINk will be preparing its own response. If you have suggestions or examples of good practice in supporting carers, please let us know by 6 September, by emailing enfieldlink@cidagroup.org or calling 020 8885 1900.
