Outpatient Appointments

Following reports of delays in obtaining an appointment at an outpatient clinic, Enfield LINk has launched an investigation into the time elapsed between the date of referral by a G.P. and when they were offered an appointment.
A team of authorised representatives was appointed to plan and undertake the survey and they started interviewing patients who had been referred by their family doctor and were attending a clinic for their first appointment. Based on the results of these interviews a questionnaire was prepared and staff at clinics at Barnet and at Chase Farm hospitals began handing these to first-time appointments together with a stamped and addressed envelope in which to return their completed forms. When the questionnaires were analysed a report was prepared.
The team was impressed by the enthusiastic help given to them by the outpatient manager, matron and sisters, staff and even a consultant, all of whom seemed keen to identify and eliminate any delays in seeing patients referred by their GPs. Enfield LINk Board is following up the issues raised in the report.
