Adult social care personalisation

People benefiting from Personalisation in Enfield

‘Personalisation’ is the latest buzz-word in social care, and increasingly in health as well. The government has told local authorities – which are responsible for arranging social care when needed – that it wants ‘a more pro-active and preventative model centred on improved wellbeing, with greater choice and control for individuals…

The overall vision is that the state should empower citizens to shape their own lives and the services they receive’.

This includes a shift towards self-assessment and personal budgets, in which service users have more control over how funding for their support is spent, whether they get direct payments or councils administer the money instead.

There is a lot of agreement nationally that people should have more control over their own care, but also some concerns. If personalisation is to fully benefit people needing support, their voices need to be heard in planning how it will work.

Enfield Council has been working on personalisation for some time, including testing self-assessment and support planning, so that changes can be in place by April 2011. It is now inviting local people to take part in a consultation (which can be found at www.enfield.gov.uk/info/867/council-consultation-service_delivery/1115/personalisation_in_enfield or call Customer Services Centre on 020 8379 1000), to end on 17 September 2010.

Enfield LINk will be promoting awareness of this, and is also gathering more in-depth information on what carers and people needing care might want.

If you would like to find out more, or have suggestions, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing enfieldlink@cidagroup.org or calling 020 8885 1900. This is an important opportunity to help shape care services so that they more closely fit what users and carers want.
